Book Review: Catch the Wind by Bruce Lowery

This Monday 25 November, the sequel to Catch the Wind by Bruce Lowery will be published. Our publishing coordinator Suz Robinson will be hosting a virtual launch of Out of Time, so I thought it timely to post Suz’s delightful review of Bruce’s first book.

This is the first time a Hembury Books team member has hosted a book launch (rather than me doing it), and as the founder I could not be prouder. I love seeing the connections our team makes with our authors.

REVIEW: CATCH THE WIND BY BRUCE LOWERY

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

“I read a lot of nonfiction, and I love memoir. Catch The Wind was a different and very much welcome reading experience as it took me to a time and place which is not my usual era. I really loved it for this, and my enjoyment overall was quite unexpected.

The music and fashion, the vernacular and the tomfoolery – this will appeal to the right audience. The story of the boys spending $25 plus on bellbottoms of immaculate quality at the distinguished tailor was priceless.

The music, the pop culture, the fashion, the work ethic, city versus country, the old-fashioned values; it made me ponder that younger generations (me included) simply don’t appreciate what and how things were done before – that things weren’t offered up on a plate, you had to work bloody hard.

A coming-of-age tale about a young man who dropped everything to escape from the drama unfolding at home. He was quick to make serious decisions, to leave his home in a flash, without financial means and proper supplies.

This trip was full of mirth, hilarity and a bit of vulgarity, too. A memoir for all ages: for the older generations to flick the switch of memory, and for the younger crowd to learn a little of what it was like before all our mod cons, technology and fast delivery windows.

If you enjoy a good yarn, stories using old-fashioned snail mail correspondence as part of the narrative, mateship and adventure, this is a fun read. Looking forward to its sequel, which is out very soon.”

Learn more about Bruce Lowery

Bruce’s two books describe his year-long adventure across outback Australia in the late 1960s. From fettling in the Nullarbor to a sheep station in Queensland, 18-year-old Bruce meets a host of colourful characters and comes a cropper on a couple of occasions.

Check out the amazing book trailer on Bruce Lowery’s website! You can also book Bruce as a speaker – it goes without saying that he can spin a yarn!

A happy author

Bruce was one of Hembury Books’ first clients when we began business in October 2023, and he is the first author to return to us to publish a second book. Bruce sent me this review yesterday, which is just terrific.

‘While making the final preparations for the publication of my second memoir there was never any doubt that I would again be using the services of the great team at Hembury Books.
Energy and enthusiasm in abundance.’
Congratulations to Bruce on becoming a two-time author.
